Centers
The Role
The center is the most versatile position in hockey. You're responsible for both ends of the ice — supporting the defense in your own zone, winning faceoffs, driving offensive play, and being the first forward back on the backcheck. Great centers are relentless workers with high hockey IQ.
Faceoffs
Faceoffs are one of the center's most visible responsibilities. Winning draws gives your team immediate possession.
Key principles:
- Get low and load your legs before the puck drops
- Read the opposing center's stance and grip
- Have a plan before the draw — know where your wingers are
- Use your body to shield the puck, not just your stick
- Practice forehand and backhand draws equally
Common mistakes:
- Standing too upright — you lose leverage
- Always using the same move — good centers read and adjust
- Not communicating the play to your wingers before the draw
Two-Way Play
Centers must be effective in all three zones. The best centers transition seamlessly between offense and defense.
Defensive zone:
- Support the defensemen low — don't float high
- Cover the slot and front of the net
- Be the first forward to pick up the loose puck and start the breakout
- Communicate with your defensemen on coverage assignments
Neutral zone:
- Lead the backcheck — you're the first forward back
- Support the puck carrier through the neutral zone
- Be available as a passing option in the middle of the ice
Offensive zone:
- Drive to the net and create traffic
- Support the cycle from the middle
- Be ready for the centering pass in the slot
- Read the play and be in position for a one-timer or deflection
Playmaking
Centers often have the puck more than any other forward. Your ability to distribute it effectively makes everyone around you better.
- Keep your head up and scan the ice before receiving the puck
- Use quick, tape-to-tape passes — no floating saucers in traffic
- Win the puck on the wall and move it quickly to open space
- Look for the back-door play when the defense collapses
