Wings

The Role

Wingers are responsible for generating offense along the boards, finishing scoring chances, and covering the points in the defensive zone. Whether you play left wing or right wing, your ability to win board battles, get to the net, and transition the puck up ice defines your effectiveness.

Offensive Zone Play

Forechecking:

  • Know your forechecking assignment — are you F1, F2, or F3?
  • Take smart angles to cut off passing lanes, not just chase the puck
  • Support the cycle by staying high or driving low based on the system

Net-front presence:

  • Get to the dirty areas in front of the net
  • Screen the goalie without interfering — position yourself just outside the crease
  • Be ready for deflections, rebounds, and centering passes
  • Don't turn your back to the play in front of the net

Wall play:

  • Win puck battles along the boards with body position, not just stick
  • Protect the puck with your body and move it quickly
  • Look for the centering pass or the D-to-D option

Defensive Zone Responsibilities

Wings often get overlooked on defense, but your defensive coverage is critical.

  • Cover the opposing defenseman at the point — don't let them walk in
  • Don't chase the puck behind your own net — that's the center or D's job
  • Be the outlet on the breakout — get to your lane along the boards
  • On the backcheck, pick up the trailing forward, not the puck carrier

Left Wing vs. Right Wing

Playing your off-wing (e.g., a left-handed shot playing right wing) gives you advantages on one-timers and cutting to the middle. Playing your natural side gives you better board play and passing angles along the wall. Both have tradeoffs — know which your coach expects.
